When it comes to managing chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity, medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy have become prominent in the discussion. Both of these drugs have gained popularity for their effectiveness, but what exactly sets them apart? In this blog post, we’ll dive into the differences between Ozempic and Wegovy, their uses, how they work, and what you need to know if you are considering these options.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic + Wegovy are used for different things - Ozempic is a medication for type 2 diabetes

Ozempic is a brand name for the drug semaglutide, which is used primarily for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications work by mimicking the action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone, which increases insulin secretion, decreases glucagon release, and slows gastric emptying. This helps to control blood sugar levels and, in some cases, promote weight loss.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is intended for weight loss and can be injected in the upper arm

Wegovy is another brand name for semaglutide, but it is specifically approved for chronic weight management. While it is chemically identical to Ozempic, the dosages and indications differ. Wegovy is designed for individuals who are obese or overweight with at least one weight-related condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.

What are the similarities?

The similarities of Ozempic and Wegovy include:

Both Ozempic and Wegovy contain the same active ingredient; semaglutide.

Licenses

Ozempic is specifically licensed for the treatment of diabetes type 2 whereas Wegovy is licensed for weight loss. This is in individuals with a BMI of 30kg/m2 or greater, or those who have a BMI of 27kg/m2 with other weight related health conditions including sleep apnoea and high blood pressure.

Goals

The aim of Ozempic is to control blood sugar levels, therefore an individual may stay on a certain strength indefinitely.

With Wegovy, the aim is to reach a dose of 2.4mg weekly, however this must be achieved in a stepwise approach e.g:

  • Week 1 to 4 – 0.25 mg
  • Week 5 to 8 – 0.5 mg
  • Week 9 to 12 – 1 mg
  • Week 13 to 16 – 1.7 mg
  • From week 17 – 2.4 mg

The side effects for both products are the same, they include:

  • Headaches
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling weak or tired

Rare side effects can include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). This presents as long lasting stomach ache, if this is experienced then the pen should be stopped immediately and you should speak to your prescriber.

Which one is best for you?

Whilst Ozempic and Wegovy share the same active ingredient, semaglutide, they are tailored for different primary purposes—diabetes management and weight management. If you are looking to lose weight, Wegovy is the preferred product as it is licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) specifically for chronic weight management. Wegovy offers a greater scope of dosages, allowing for a gradual increase to achieve maximum weight loss when combined with a healthy diet and exercise.
